Using JMatch in Hot Potatoes: Audio and Picture Matching Tutorial

A. Definition of JMatch

JMatch is one of the applications included in the Hot Potatoes software package, designed to create matching exercises. In JMatch, students are asked to match items in the left column with the correct items in the right column. The content can include text, images, and audio, making it especially suitable for language learning, particularly listening and vocabulary activities.

B. Functions of JMatch

JMatch serves several important functions, including:

  • Training students’ ability to match related information (word–meaning, audio–image, question–answer).

  • Supporting listening, reading, and vocabulary practice.

  • Creating interactive HTML-based exercises that can be opened in a web browser.

  • Providing automatic feedback for students

C. The Use of JMatch in Teaching and Learning

In English language teaching, JMatch is commonly used to:

  • Match audio recordings with pictures (listening comprehension).

  • Match words with their meanings.

  • Match sentences with their appropriate functions or responses.

These activities encourage active participation and increase students’ motivation through interactive and visual learning.

How to Use JMatch (General Steps)

  1. Open the Hot Potatoes application.

  2. Select JMatch.

  3. Enter the exercise title in the Title field.

  4. Fill in the Left (ordered) items and Right (jumbled) items as needed.

  5. Adjust the display through Options → Configure Output.

  6. Save the file and export it as an HTML page.

Creating Audio–Picture Matching Exercises

  • In the Left (ordered) items column, insert audio using the following code:

<audio src="1.mp3" controls></audio>
  • Repeat the same steps for other audio files (2.mp3, 3.mp3, and so on).

  • In the Right (jumbled) items column, insert images using this code:

<img src="1.jpg" width="170" height="150">
  • Make sure all audio and image files are saved in the same folder.

This type of exercise allows students to listen to the audio and match it with the correct picture.

2. Adding a Reading Text (Instructions or Material)

  • Click Insert → Reading Text.

  • Check Include a reading text.

  • Fill in the Title and Procedure Text, such as learning objectives, instructions, or a short explanation.

The reading text functions as an introduction or guidance before students start the exercise.

3. Adjusting the Appearance

  • Go to Options → Configure Output.

  • In the Appearance tab, you can:

    • Change the background.

    • Adjust the colors of the title, text, and links.

    • Customize fonts to make the exercise more attractive.

These settings help create a more student-friendly and visually appealing activity.

Example of Audio Links for JMatch

Below is an example of an audio code that can be used in JMatch:

<audio src="audio/listening1.mp3" controls></audio>

If the audio file is hosted online:

<audio src="https://www.example.com/audio/listening1.mp3" controls></audio>

Note: For Hot Potatoes activities, it is recommended to use offline (local) audio files so the exercise can run without an internet connection.

Conclusion

JMatch in Hot Potatoes is an effective tool for creating multimedia-based matching exercises. By combining audio, images, and text, teachers can design interactive, engaging, and meaningful learning activities that support students’ language development in the digital era.
